The passenger

A gripping opera about displacement, guilt and hatred

On an ocean liner leaving Germany Lisa, a former SS guard at the Auschwitz concentration camp, is confronted with her past when she was sees a mysterious passenger who reminds her of a former prisoner. After the encounter Lisa is thrown back into hidden parts of her biography and forced to confront the truth – her horrible past penetrates the present and reveals the lies she is living with: Auschwitz returns. The deeper Lisa digs into her past, the more she gets entangled in contradictions, until she finally confronts the mysterious passenger directly…

Weinberg’s gloomy and sombre orchestral sounds are intertwined with and disrupted by Russian folklore, Jazz and Chansons, German children’s songs or quotations from Bach, Mahler or Beethoven as echoes of a denounced culture.

General Manager and Artistic Director Philipp Kochheim has chosen The passenger as his first production at Den Jyske Opera.
