The Passenger

Now hailed as one of the great masterpieces of the 20th century, Mieczyslaw Weinberg’s opera “The Passenger” had its late premiere in 2010 - more than forty years after its completion. Since then it has been performed in London, New York, Frankfurt or Madrid to enthusiastic and deeply moved audiences.

After his entire family had been killed during the Holocaust, Weinberg wanted to write a work that dealt with the horrors of war, and at the same time confirmed his deep faith in the final victory of freedom, justice and humanism.  When he read Zofia Posmysz’ autobiographical novel “The Passenger”, which depicts her experiences as an Auschwitz prisoner, he had found his ideal subject.
